Accepted solution by Freya J. — check for a hidden power issue: under Power Management tab, untick Allow the computer to turn off this device and see if negotiation…
  1. guys pls help i pay for a local NAS and my home server is wired, but speed tests top out at roughly 95 Mbps. windows says the link speed is 100/100 Mbps. thats suspicious, because before the Realtek AOpen DE965-HE Realtek Lan Driver 5.736_0820 update it showed 1000 and i was getting full speed. heres what the adapter status looks like:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    i havent touched the cable or the router. can a driver update really change the negotiated speed, or is it a coincidence and smth physical is going on? any ideas??

  2. Check the adapter settings: Device Manager > Network adapters > Ethernet > Properties > Advanced. Find Speed & Duplex and make sure its Auto Negotiation. Updates sometimes reset or change this 🤷 Dont force 1000 full unless auto fails.

  3. yeahhh check the status in a terminal: Get-NetAdapter | Select Name, LinkSpeed in PowerShell shows the negotiated speed quickly as you test different cables and ports.

  4. oof if the lapotp gets gigabit on the same cable and port, roll back the LAN driver in Device Manager > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, or install the mothebroard makers version from their support page.

  6. A ~95 Mbps cap almost always means teh link negotiated 100 Mbps. Gigabit needs all four wire pairs, 100 Mbps only uses two. A damaged cable, a bent pin or a cheap coupler can drop it to 100 :D Swap the cable first since it's teh cheapest test.

  8. check for a hidden power issue: under Power Management tab, untick Allow the computer to turn off this device and see if negotiation behaves after reboot. worked for me anyway 🤷

  11. Forcing 1000 Mbps full duplex can make things worse with some switches. Stick with auto negotiation and fix teh root cause. but hey ymmv
