  1. ok weird one hey, say youre picking a laptop for full-stack web development with Docker, a few browser windows and an editor running all day. Budget is mid-range.

theres a constant stream of spec sheets and its hard to know which numbers actually make a difference for this kind of work. id rather put money where it counts and keep teh machine for a good few years.

whats worth spending on, and whats safe to save on? any ideas??

  2. oof id prefer to stay on the OS i already use, which isnt Linux.. 😂 mostly on the go, working from cafés and libraries... battery life matters more than raw power.

ok so dont neglect the stuff you physically interact with all day: keyboard, screen and battery life. A slightly slower CPU is barely noticeable for web work, but a dim screen or a mushy keyboard is noticeable every minute. Try one in a shop if u can. hope that helps :)

  4. @kernel_works picked one with a good screen and battery life, and enough RAM for containers in a VM :/ Tried teh keyboard in a shop first, which was good advice. worked for me anyway 🤷

  5. two things to check, think about the OS and container story too... containers run natively on Linux; on other systems they run inside a lightweight VM, which uses extra memory and can make file-heavy workloads slower... its all workable, but its another reason RAM matters if ure not on Linux. worked for me anyway 🤷

  6. yeahhh an SSD is non-negotiable; thats standard now anyway. Size matters more than speed for dev work. Container images, node_modules folders and databases add up quickly, and running out of disk space is a constant annoyance. Check whether teh drive can be upgraded later; some models allow it, many dont. fingers crossed 🤞
