the equalizer app vanished after the update. where did the headphone profile go?

hmmmm not sure about that honestly, sometimes the old app is just not compatible with the new driver. A small equalizer tool like Equalizer APO is an alternative if the vendor app keeps breaking. but hey ymmv

@samip254 omg finally followed teh uninstall and reinstall order exactly. teh headphone profile works with HD ALC 880 Audio CODECs R1.71 now, thx!
