the home-built tower is plugged into a gigabit switch setup. the adapter details say 100 Mbps full duplex :D my laptop on teh same cable and port negotiates gigabit just fine, sooo teh switch port seems okay. the only change on the home-built tower was the PCIe Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000M Controller Driver update from Realtek. what settings should I look at?

  3. ok so a ~95 Mbps cap almost always means the link negotaited 100 Mbps. Gigabit needs all four wire pairs, 100 Mbps only uses two. A damaged cable, a bent pin or a cheap coupler can drop it to 100. Swap teh cable first since it's teh cheapest test. hope that helps :)

    it works on my machine™

  4. ok so check the adapter settings: Device Manager > Network adapters > Ethernet > Properties > Advanced. Find Speed & Duplex and make sure its Auto Negotiation. Updates sometimes reset or change this. Dont force 1000 full unless auto fails.

  5. hmmmm not sure about that laptop working on the same cable doesnt fully clear teh cable. some ports are more tolerant of marginal cables than ohters. id still try a known-good cable.
