Graphics Driver Recovered From A Timeout AGAIN. How Do I Find The Real Cause? (pls help)

  1. Okay, this is driving me nuts. Black screen, fans ramp up, and about five seconds later Windows comes back like nothing happened. Then this pops up:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    It's always while running a 3D benchmark. My small form factor PC is not overclocked and temps look normal in the vendor overlay. The only change i can point to is the Graphics Driver update from Intel. i've already restarted a dozen times, obviously. Is there a log somewhere that tells me what actually timed out, or am i stuck guessing? what am i doing wrong??

  3. ahh right the small form factor PC had a factory OC profile turned on in the vendor app... i didnt even know it was there. hope thats enough info 😅

  5. lol same thing happened to me some people raise TdrDelay in the reigstry to hide this. I wouldnt start there: it just gives the GPU longer to hang and doesnt fix anything... use it as a diagnostic at most, and reomve it afterwards.

  6. hmmm that pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didnt ansewr within the timeout so Windows reset the driver. Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx... the timestamps tell u if it lines up with your symptom.

  9. ahh classic since it started right after the update, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. if the button is greyed out, download the previous package from the Intel support page and install that instead.

  10. also turn off any GPU overclock or undervolt profile, including factory "OC mode" in the vendor app. A new driver can expose an undervolt that was only barely stable before. good luck man!

  14. lol same thing happened to me if rollback doesn't help, do a clean install: download teh driver you want first, disconnect from the internet so Windows Update doesn't push its own, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then install the downloaded package, leftover profiles from older versions cause more of these than ppl think. worked for me anyway 🤷
