Accepted solution by Zoe Pereira — oof that error is often misleading. Installers check teh GPUs hardware ID against their INF file, not just the OS. Open Device Manager…
  1. i downloaded NVIDIA GeForce/Ion Notebook Graphics Driver 258.69 Beta , the download page clearly lists Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Im on one of those... i ran the official installer on my home-built tower and got this:

it says teh driver isnt compatible with this version of Windows :) ive rebooted, run it as admin, redownloaded it. same thing. my current driver is quite old and I need the new one for a game. why would the installer refuse when the OS is listed?

  2. lol same thing happened to me make sure u picked teh right architecture and the right OS family. A package meant for a different Windows edition, or a server/workstation branch, will refuse with teh same generic text.

nothing is more permanent than a temporary workaround

  4. Some laptops use OEM-customized drivers (common on hybrid graphics). In that case get the driver from the laptop maker's support page, or use the generic NVIDIA package only if it explicitly lists mobile GPUs.

oof that error is often misleading. Installers check teh GPUs hardware ID against their INF file, not just the OS. Open Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Details > Hardware Ids and compare. If you grabbed the desktop package for a laptop GPU (or vice versa), youll get this exact message.

  9. nah tbh OEM drivers can lag far behind. If the laptop maker's version is ancient, the vendor's generic mobile package is usually fine once you match the right one.
