  1. Short version: StarForce TNT/GeForce/Quadro - 56.63 (Windows 2000/XP) won't install.

    Windows Update

longer version: my prebuilt desktop came with a manufacturer-customized graphics driver. I wanted teh newer one from MSI directly. every installer I try says it's incompatible with my Windows. is the laptop maker locking this down, or is my Windows install broken? I would really prefer not to reinstall Windows just to update one driver. if there is a way to check what the installer is actually comparing, I would love to know it.

  4. that error is often misleading... installres check the GPUs hadrware ID against their INF file, not just teh OS... open Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Details > Hardware Ids and compare, if you grabbed the desktop package for a laptop GPU (or vice versa), youll get this exact message. good luck man!

  5. yeahhh some laptops use OEM-customized drivers (common on hybrid graphics) 😅 in that case get teh driver from teh laptop maker's support page, or use teh generic MSI package only if it explicitly lists mobile GPUs.

  6. for me it was teh theraml paste. swapped it and boom, fixed

  7. run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth if teh installer fails on every version. A damaged component store can break driver installers in odd ways. fingers crossed 🤞

  8. been there man check your Windows build with winver, newer driver packages can require a minimum feature update... if youre on an old build, install the pending feature update first and try again. good luck man!

  10. Accepted solution

oh ive been there lol as a last resort u can extract the package and install teh INF manually: Device Manager > Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick > Have Disk, or pnputil /add-driver <path>\*.inf /install. if the INF doesnt list your hardware ID, tho, dont force it. worked for me anyway 🤷

  11. hmm idk respectfully disagree, i tried that and it made tnt/geforce/quadro worse. reading this at 2am instead of sleeping, no regrets idk maybe im wrong lol

  12. I wouldn't force an INF that doesn't list ur hardware ID. Even if it installs, hybrid graphics switching can break.

  13. @hquintero wowww ok installed teh pending Windows feature update, then StarForce TNT/GeForce/Quadro - 56.63 (Windows 2000/XP) went on without a single complaint. the error was technically true, just unhelpful. owe u a beer 🍺
