did the new nvidia driver break my gaming desktop, or is my card dying?

Accepted solution by Caleb Castillo — if rollback doesn't help, do a clean install: download the driver you want first, disconnect from the internet sooo Windows Update doesn't…
  1. okay, this is driving me nuts 🤦 black screen, fans ramp up, and about five seconds later Windows comes back like nothing happened. then this pops up:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    its always while scrubbing a 4K video timeline. my gaming desktop is not overclocked and temps look nomral in the vendor overlay ;) the only change i can point to is the GeForce Ion Notebook Graphics Driver upadte from NVIDIA. ive already restarted a dozen times, obviously. is there a log somewhere that tells me what actually timed out, or am i stuck guessing?

  2. that pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didnt answer within the timeout so Windows reset the driver... open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx. The timestamps tell u if it lines up with your symptom. lmk how it goes

  3. since it started right after the upadte, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click ur GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. if the button is greyed out, download the prveious package from the NVIDIA support page and install that instead.

  5. Accepted solution

    if rollback doesn't help, do a clean install: download the driver you want first, disconnect from the internet sooo Windows Update doesn't push its own, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then install the downloaded package. leftover profiles from older versions cause more of these than ppl think. fingers crossed 🤞

    DNS. its always DNS

  6. wait what id actually do DDU first rather than a rollback, rollback keeps the same leftovers around, and a clean slate tells you more.

  7. @calebc69 dude clean install with DDU on the previous NVIDIA driver and teh black screens are gone. Two days of scrubbing a 4K video timeline and not a single 4101. Thank you! seriously made my day 😭🙏
