  1. This is so frustrating. Im trying to update the graphics driver on my office PC, and the custom install option fails immediately:

    Windows Update

    Windows Update
    We couldn't complete the updates.
Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer.

"Not compatible with this vresion of Windows." Windows Update says Im fully up to date. The P4M900, VN896, CN896 Chrome9 Display Driver page supports Windows XP, Windows 2000. Is teh installer checking something besides the OS version? i feel like Im missing smth obvious, i even tried downloading it on another computer and copying it over, just in case teh file was corrupted. Same error, same instant fialure. i am honestly running out of ideas. im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  3. winver shows a pretty old build. Windows Update said up to date but there was a feature update waiting under optional updates.

  4. hmmm that error is often misleading, installers check the GPUs hardware ID against their INF file, not just the OS, open Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Details > Hardware Ids and compare, if u grabbed the desktop package for a laptop GPU (or vice versa), ull get this exact message.

  6. been there man some laptops use OEM-customized drivers (common on hybrid graphics)... in that case get the driver from the laptop makers support page, or use the generic VIA package only if it explicitly lists mobile GPUs.

  7. Accepted solution

ahh classic as a last resort you can extract the package and install the INF manually: Device Manager > Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick > Have Disk, or pnputil /add-driver <path>\*.inf /install. If the INF doesn't list your hardwrae ID, though, don't force it. worked for me anyway 🤷

  9. @dario_uplink Installed the pending Windows feature update, then P4M900, VN896, CN896 Chrome9 Display Driver 20.10.02a went on without a single complaint. The error was technically true, just unhelpful.
