Laptop GPU driver vs desktop driver: is that why GeForce Beta Drivers won't install?

lol same thing happened to me as a last resort you can extract the package and install the INF manually: Device Manager > Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick > Have Disk, or pnputil /add-driver <path>\*.inf /install 🙏 if the INF doesnt list your hardware ID, tho, dont force it. worked for me anyway 🤷

  1. This is sooo frustrating. I'm trying to update the graphics driver on my gaming laptop, and the vendor app fails immediately:

    Windows Update

    Windows Update
    We couldn't complete the updates.
Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer.

    Error code: 0x800f0922

"Not compatible with this version of Windows." Windows Update says Im fully up to date. The GeForce Beta Drivers page supports Windows XP 🤷 Is the installer checking smth besides the OS version?? I feel like Im missing something obvious. I even tried downloading it on another computer and copying it over, just in case the file was corrupted. Same error, same instant failure. I am honestly running out of ideas. any ideas??

  2. been there man that error is often misleading. installers check the GPUs hardware ID against their INF file, not just teh OS. open Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Details > Hardware Ids and compare. if you grabbed the desktop package for a laptop GPU (or vice versa), ull get this exact message. worked for me anyway 🤷

the real fix was the friends we made along the way

  3. check your Windows build with winver. Newer driver packages can require a minimum feature update. If you're on an old build, install the pending feature update first and try again. good luck man!

somewhere an AI is confidently telling someone the wrong fix rn

  5. ahh classic run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth if the installer fails on every version. A daamged component store can break driver installers in odd ways.

    it works on my machine™

  9. ok so some laptops use OEM-customized drivers (common on hybrid graphics). in that case get the driver from the laptop makers support page, or use the generic NVIDIA package only if it explicitly lists mobile GPUs. hope that helps :)

  12. lol same thing happened to me make suree you picked the right architecture and teh right OS family. A package meant for a different Windows edition, or a srever/workstation branch, will refuse with teh same generic text.
