  1. hmmmm ok getting DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED in a competitive shooter, and now in a second game too, which makes me think its not a game problem.

    Fatal error

    Fatal error
The game has crashed and will now close.

    DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
The GPU device instance has been suspended.

timeline: installed GeForce Hotfix Driver from NVIDIA, crashes started the same night. i tried rolling back but now Windows Update keeps reinstalling something :) im starting to feel like Im fighting my own PC. whats the proper way to test this? i have a spare evening and i am willing to try thigns methodically, one at a time.

  2. does it also happen in other games, or only in modded city builders?

  5. ok so look at the game's own crash logs too... many engines write a log with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG vs DEVICE_REMOVED vs DEVICE_RESET. hung usually means a timeout; removed can also mean the card actually dropped off teh bus, which points at power or the slot.

    lol

  6. yeahhh DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED means teh GPU stopped responding and Windows reset it (TDR), so the game lost its D3D device. Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System for Event ID 4101 at the crash time 🤷 If you see it, its a GPU/driver reset, not a game file problem. good luck man!

  7. hmmm to stop Windows Update replacing ur chosen driver: run gpedit.msc (Pro) and enable Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Do not include drivers with Windows Updates. On Home, use System > About > Advanced system settings > Hardware > Device Installation Settings > No. good luck man!

  11. yeahhh do a clean install of teh driver version you trust: download it from the NVIDIA support page, disconnect the network, boot to Safe Mode, run DDU, reboot, install. Then test modded city builders for a few sessions before changing anything else.

  13. oh ive been there lol remove any GPU overclock and memory overclock. device removed errors are very sensitive to VRAM instability. if u used a tuning tool, reset it to defaults and also check that no profile reapplies at startup. worked for me anyway 🤷

  14. Accepted solution

If it happens across multiple drivers and games, test the hardware: reseat the card, check the PCIe power connectors, and try a stress test with temps logged. A card that only fails when warm is a classic pattern.

  15. @jjansen turned out to be a loose PCIe power connector. reseated it and the crashes in a competitive shooter stopped. the driver update was just bad timing. u guys are the best!!!
