Accepted solution by Rhea — oof if rollback doesn't help, do a clean install: download teh driver u want first, disconnect from the internet so Windows Update doesn't…
  1. three black screens tonight, all while running a 3D benchmark. the third time it didn't recover and I had to hold the power button.

the home-built tower is about two years old. I updated to GeForce Graphics Driver 416.34 because a game asked me to, and honestly I regret it. I've read about TDR, DDU, rollback, registry tweaks, and now I'm overwhelmed. can someone give me a sane order to try things in so I'm not changing five things at once? im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  2. hmmm check power before blaming the driver :) A PSU thats borderline or a daisy-chained PCIe cable can cause eaxctly this under load 🙏 If its a desktop, use two separate PCIe power cables if teh card has two connectors. lmk how it goes

  3. hmmm that pattern (black screen, then "display driver sotpped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didnt answer within the timeout so Windows reset the driver. Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx. the timestamps tell u if it lines up with ur symptom. lmk how it goes

  5. Since it started right after teh update, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click ur GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. If teh button is greyed out, download the previous package from the NVIDIA support page and install that instead. lmk how it goes

  6. respectfully disagree, i tried that and it made gpu worse. following, having the same problem but hey ymmv

  7. ok so some people raise TdrDelay in teh registry to hide this. i wouldnt start there: it just gives teh GPU lnoger to hang and doesnt fix anything. use it as a diagnostic at most, and remove it afterwards. lmk how it goes

  10. Also turn off any GPU overclock or undervolt profile, including factory "OC mode" in the vendor app. A new driver can expose an undervolt that was only barely stable before. hope that helps :)

  11. oof if rollback doesn't help, do a clean install: download teh driver u want first, disconnect from the internet so Windows Update doesn't push its own, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then install teh downloaded package. leftover profiles from older versions cause more of these than people think. fingers crossed 🤞

    it works on my machine™

  14. ehh id actually do DDU first rather than a rollback. Rollback keeps the same leftovers around, and a clean slate tells you more. idk maybe im wrong lol
