  1. i was alt-tabbing out of a fullscreen game on my home-built tower when teh whole screen just went black. audio kept going for a second, then stuttered, then teh picture came back with a little notification that teh display driver had stopped responding and recovered. this started the same evening i installed teh AMD Catalyst Radeon Display Driver 4.2 (Windows 98/ME) udpate. heres the message i keep getting:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    it happens maybe twice an hour now. before the update, zero problems for months. I dont want to start blaming the hardware if this is just a bad driver, but I also dont wanna ignore a card thats on its way out. where do I even look first?

  3. ok so that pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didnt answer within the timeout so Windows reset the driver. open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx... the timestmaps tell u if it lines up with your symptom. fingers crossed 🤞

  4. Accepted solution

    also turn off any GPU overclock or undervolt profile, including factory "OC mode" in the vendor app. A new driver can expose an undervolt that was only barely stable before.
