yeahhh since it started right after teh update, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. if teh button is greyed out, download the previous package from the AMD support page and install that instead.

  1. long time lurker first post lol i was playing an open-world game on my home-built tower when the whole screen just went black. Audio kept going for a second, then stuttered, then the picture came back with a little notification that teh display driver had stopped responding and recovered. This started the same evening I installed the AMD Catalyst Display Driver 12.8 update. Here's the message I keep getting:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    It happens maybe twice an hour now. Before the update, zero problems for months. I don't want to start blaming the hardware if this is just a bad driver, but I also don't want to ignore a card that's on its way out. Where do I even look first?

  4. oof check power before blaming the driver. A PSU that's borderline or a daisy-chained PCIe cable can cause exactly this under load. If it's a desktop, use two separate PCIe power cables if the card has two connectors. good luck man!

  5. oh ive been there lol also turn off any GPU overclock or undervolt profile, including factory "OC mode" in teh vendor app 😅 A new driver can expose an undervolt that was only barely stable before.

  7. some people raise TdrDelay in the registry to hide this, i wouldnt start there: it just gives the GPU longer to hang and doesnt fix anything. Use it as a diagnostic at most, and remove it afterwards.

  8. been there man if rollback doesnt help, do a clean isntall: download teh driver u want first, disconnect from teh internet so Windows Update doesnt push its own, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then instlal the downloaded package. Leftover profiles from older versions cause more of these than people think.

  11. hmm idk not every TDR is the driver. If the black screens continue on two different driver versions, I'd start testing the card and PSU instead of hopping versions.

  12. @quinn_lucky holy cow turned off the factory OC profile and stayed on Catalyst Display Driver 12.8, stable now, the new driver must have been a little less forgiving of that profile. seriously made my day 😭🙏
