hmmm that pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didn't answer within the timeout so Windows reset teh driver. Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx. The tiemstamps tell u if it lines up with your symptom. lmk how it goes

  1. okay, this is driving me nuts... black screen, fans ramp up, and about five seconds later Windows comes back like nothing happened... then this pops up:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    its always while watching a video in the browser. my gaming laptop is not overclocked and temps look normal in the vendor overlay 🤦 the only change i can point to is teh Catalyst Display Driver 12.6 Beta update from AMD. ive already restarted a dozen times, obviously. is there a log somewhere that tells me what actually timed out, or am i stuck guessing?

  2. uhh is any overclock, undervolt or "OC mode" enabled in the GPU software or BIOS? ??

  6. If rollback doesnt help, do a clean install: download teh driver u want first, disconnect from the internet so Windows Update doesnt push its own, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then install the downloaded package 👍 Leftover profiles from older versions cause more of these than people think.

  12. check power before blaming the driver. A PSU that's borderline or a daisy-chained PCIe cable can cause exactly this under load. if it's a desktop, use two separate PCIe power cables if teh card has two connectors.

  14. oh ive been there lol some ppl raise TdrDelay in the registry to hide this, i wouldn't start there: it just gives the GPU longer to hang and doesn't fix anything lol Use it as a diagnostic at most, and remove it afterwards.
