Did The New VIA Driver Break My Gaming Desktop, Or Is My Card Dying?

Check power before blaming the driver. A PSU that's borderline or a daisy-chained PCIe cable can cause exactly this under load. If it's a desktop, use two separate PCIe power cables if the card has two connectors.

  1. okay, this is driving me nuts. black screen, fans ramp up, and about five seconds later Windows comes back like nothing happened. then this pops up:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    It's always while running a 3D benchmark. My gaming desktop is not overclocked and temps look normal in the vendor overlay. The only change I can point to is the K8M890CE & K8N890CE Display Driver update from VIA. I've already restarted a dozen times, obviously. Is there a log somewhere that tells me what actually timed out, or am I stuck guessing?

    RAM prices doing their own thing again smh

  2. oh ive been there lol since it started right after the update, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. if the button is greyed out, download teh previous package from teh VIA support page and install that instead. worked for me anyway 🤷

  4. not every TDR is the driver. if the black screens continue on two diffreent driver versions, Id start testing the card and PSU instead of hopping versions.
