DID THE NEW ASUS DRIVER BREAK MY SMALL FORM FACTOR PC, OR IS MY CARD DYING?

Accepted solution by Bo Jensen — ok so some people raise TdrDelay in the registry to hide this. i wouldnt start there: it just gives the GPU longer to hang and doesnt fix…
  1. im literally losing my mind here okay, this is driving me nuts. Black screen, fans ramp up, and about five seconds later Windows comes back like nothing happened. Then this pops up:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

It's always while scrubbing a 4K video timeline :/ My small form factor PC is not overclocked and temps look normal in the vendor overlay. The only change I can point to is the ET2203 TV Tuner Driver update from ASUS. I've already restarted a dozen times, obviously. Is there a log somewhere that tells me what actually timed out, or am I stuck guessing?

  2. wait do you see Event ID 4101 in the System log at teh same times as the black screens?

  3. yeah so event Viewer is full of 4101 warnings, and every one matches a black screen while scrubbing a 4K video timeline. idk what else to say tbh

  4. that pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: teh GPU didnt answer within teh timeout so Windows reset the dirver. open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx... the timestamps tell you if it lines up with your symptom.

  5. oh ive been there lol check power before blaming the driver. A PSU that's borderline or a daisy-chained PCIe cable can cause exactly this under load. If it's a desktop, use two separate PCIe power cables if the card has two connectors. worked for me anyway 🤷

  6. ok so for me it was teh settings... swapped it and boom, fixed

  7. lol same thing happened to me also turn off any GPU overclock or undervolt profile, including factory "OC mode" in teh vendor app. A new driver can expose an undervolt that was only barely stable before.

  8. +1 same here lmk how it goes

  9. +1 same here fingers crossed 🤞

  10. oof if rollback doesnt help, do a clean install: download the driver you want first, disconnect from the intenret so Windows Update doesnt push its own, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then install teh downloaded package. Leftover profiles from older versions cause more of these than ppl think. worked for me anyway 🤷

my pc fans sound like a jet taking off but sure

  11. been there man since it staretd right after the update, roll back first ;) Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click ur GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. If teh button is greyed out, download teh previous package from the GPU makers support page and install that instaed.

  12. Accepted solution

ok so some people raise TdrDelay in the registry to hide this. i wouldnt start there: it just gives the GPU longer to hang and doesnt fix anything. Use it as a diagnostic at most, and remove it afterwards.

nothing is more permanent than a temporary workaround

  13. @router_lab495 did u ever fix it?... my gaming rig is officially haunted ??

  14. not every TDR is the driver. if the black screens continue on two different driver versions, Id start testnig the card and PSU instead of hopping versions.

  15. @router_lab495 omggg it was the power cable. One daisy-chained cable on a hungry card. Swapped to two separate cables and the small form factor PC hasnt blacked out since. Lesson learned. owe u a beer 🍺
