  1. three black screens tonight, all while running a 3D benchmark. the third time it didnt recover and I had to hold teh power button.

the home-built tower is about two years old... i updated the graphics driver cuz a game asked me to, and honestly i regret it... ive read about TDR, DDU, rollback, registry tweaks, and now Im overwhelmed... can someone give me a sane order to try things in so Im not changing five things at once? im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  2. that pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didnt answer within teh timeout so Windows reset teh driver. open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx. the timestamps tell you if it lines up with your symptom. hope that helps :)

  4. ok so also turn off any GPU overclock or undervolt prfoile, including factory "OC mode" in the vendor app. A new driver can expose an undervolt that was only barely stable before. worked for me anyway 🤷

  5. since it started right after the update, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click ur GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver... if the button is gryeed out, download teh previous package from teh GPU makers support page and install that instead.

  7. ok update: did what @quinn.wolfe said and its fine now

  8. ok so if rollback doesnt help, do a clean install: download teh driver you want first, disconnect from the internet so Windows Update doesnt push its own, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then instlal the downloaded package. leftover profiles from older versions cause more of these than people think.

  10. some people raise TdrDelay in the registry to hide this :D I wouldnt start there: it just gives the GPU longer to hang and doesnt fix anything. use it as a diagnostic at most, and remove it afterwards.

  12. Accepted solution

hmmm check power before blaming teh driver 😅 A PSU thats borderline or a daisy-chained PCIe cable can cause exactly this under load. if its a desktop, use two separate PCIe power cables if the card has two connectors.

  13. oof for me it was the extension. swapped it and boom, fixed. dumb question but how do i even check the default config worked for me anyway 🤷

  15. wait what not every TDR is the driver. if teh black screens continue on two different driver versions, Id start testing the card and PSU instead of hopping versions.

  17. @router_hound309 it was teh power cable xD one daisy-chained cable on a hungry card. swapped to two separate cables and teh home-built tower hasn't blacked out since. lesson learned.
