DETONATOR XP DRIVERS (WINDOWS 9X/ME) RECOVERED FROM A TIMEOUT AGAIN. HOW DO I FIND THE REAL CAUSE?

  1. Three black screens tonight, all while watching a video in the browser. The third time it didnt recover and i had to hold the power button.

The workstation is about two years old, i updated to Detonator XP Drivers (Windows 9X/ME) 43.45 because a game asked me to, and honestly i regret it, i've read about TDR, DDU, rollback, registry tweaks, and now i'm overwhelmed. Can someone give me a sane order to try things in so i'm not changing five things at once?

  6. lol same thing happened to me that pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didnt answer within the timeout so Windows reset the driver, open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx. The timestamps tell u if it lines up with your sympotm. good luck man!

  7. since it started right after the update, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver... if the button is greyed out, download teh previous package from teh NVIDIA support page and install that intsead. hope that helps :)

  8. some people raise TdrDelay in teh registry to hide this, i wouldnt start there: it just gives teh GPU longer to hang and doesnt fix anything. Use it as a diagnostic at most, and reomve it afterwards. worked for me anyway 🤷

  9. If rollback doesn't help, do a clean install: download the driver u want first, disconnect from the internet so Windows Update doesn't push its own, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then instlal the downloaded package. Leftover profiles from older versions cause more of these than people think. fingers crossed 🤞

  12. Accepted solution

check power before blaming teh driver. A PSU thats borderline or a daisy-chained PCIe cable can cause exactly this under load... if its a desktop, use two separate PCIe power cables if the card has two connectors. worked for me anyway 🤷

  13. hmm idk not every TDR is the driver. If the black screens continue on two different driver versions, Id start testing the card and PSU instead of hopping versions. just my 2 cents

  14. @lea_nimbus turned off the factory OC profile and stayed on Detonator XP Drivers (Windows 9X/ME) 43.45. stable now. the new driver must have been a litlte less forgiving of that profile. thank u thank u thank u

day one patch is bigger than the actual game, classic
