I reinstalled a racing sim three times before realizing it was the GeForce Graphics Driver 313.26 for FreeBSD 64-bit

Accepted solution by Zora Mori — look at the games own crash logs too. many engines write a log with DXGI ERROR DEVICE HUNG vs DEVICE REMOVED vs DEVICE RESET 🙏 hung…

Every time Im in a racnig sim, somewhere around changing graphics settings, the game freezes and closes with this:

    Fatal error

    Fatal error
The game has crashed and will now close.

DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
The GPU device instance has been suspended.

the error text mentions DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED... the graphics card is obviously still in the PC, this only started after i installed NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Driver 313.26 for FreeBSD 64-bit . ive verified game files, lowered settings and clsoed every overlay i could find... still crashes, is the driver teh culprit, or did the update just expose a problem that was already there?

nothing is more permanent than a temporary workaround

hmmm DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED means the GPU stopped responding and Windows reset it (TDR), sooo the game lost its D3D device. check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System for Event ID 4101 at teh crash time xD if you see it, its a GPU/driver reset, not a game file problem.

look at the games own crash logs too. many engines write a log with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG vs DEVICE_REMOVED vs DEVICE_RESET 🙏 hung usually means a timeout; removed can also mean the card actually dropped off the bus, which points at power or the slot. good luck man!

ehh id try one older driver before doing DDU. if teh older one is stable, uve proven its driver related in ten minutes.

@zmori turned out to be a loose PCIe power connector... reseated it and the crasehs in a racing sim stopped. the driver update was just bad timing.
