after the nvidia update i've got a black screen after login. i just want my old driver back

    after installing NVIDIA GeForce Ion Graphics Beta Drivers 267.24 Windows XP 32-bit i've had a black screen after login on my prebuilt tower, fine, i'll just roll it back, except the Roll Back Driver button is greyed out, and when i uninstalled it Windows put a driver back on its own... i keep getting this:

    Ive heard of DDU, but pepole say its dangerous and other ppl say its teh only correct way. i just want to go back to the driver that worked yesterday. Whats teh right sequence? seriously need help here 😭

    pro or Home eidtion? it changes how u block driver updates.

    hmmm DDU isnt dangerous if you use it as intended, in Safe Mode, with a restore point first. The real risk is running it in normal mode with the network on and letting Windows race you to install a driver mid-cleanup.

    Sequence that works: 1) download teh older package from the NVIDIA support page and DDU, 2) disconnect the network, 3) boot into Safe Mode (Settings > Recovery > Advanced startup > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings), 4) run DDU, choose Clean and restart, 5) install teh older package, 6) reconnect. worked for me anyway 🤷

    at this point my GPU cost more than my car lol

    ok so if isntalling the older package over the top complains about a newer version, thats exactly the case for DDU. Installers refuse downgrades but are fine on a clean system. good luck man!

    Roll Back is greyed out when Windows doesnt have teh previous drvier package cahced. Thats normal, not a sign anything is broken. u can see whats stored with pnputil /enum-drivers and rmeove a specific pcakage with pnputil /delete-driver oemXX.inf /uninstall. hope that helps :)

    ahh classic to stop Windows Update replacing it, use Device Installation Settings > No (System > About > Advanced system settings > Hardware) or the Group Policy "Do not include dirvers with Windows Updates" on Pro.

    ok but is drivers even worth bothering with or should i just leave it. honestly just reset the BIOS and save yourself the pain

    hmm idk bolcking driver updates globally also blocks useful ones for other devices. id use the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter to hide just teh GPU driver instead. idk maybe im wrong lol

    @framepilot omggg DDU was much less scary than I expected... clean install of the older NVIDIA driver and everything works.. 🙏 saving this thread for next time. u guys are the best!!!
