run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth if the installer fails on every version. A damaged component store can break driver installers in odd ways.

  1. hmmmm ok short verison: CLE266 16.01.20.04 (Windows 98SE/ME) wont install.

longer version: my home-built tower came with a manufacturer-customized graphics driver. i wanted the newer one from VIA directly. every installer i try says its incompatible with my Windows. is teh laptop maker locking this down, or is my Windows install broken? i would really prefer not to reinstall Windows just to update one driver lmao if there is a way to check what teh installer is actually comparing, i would love to know it. im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  2. been there man as a last resort u can extract teh package and install teh INF manually: Device Manager > Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick > Have Disk, or pnputil /add-driver <path>\*.inf /install. if teh INF doesnt list your hardware ID, tho, dont force it.

  5. Make sure you picked the right architecture and the right OS family. A package meant for a different Windows edition, or a server/workstation branch, will refuse with teh same generic text.

  6. Some laptops use OEM-customized drivers (common on hybrid graphics). In that case get the driver from the laptop makers support page, or use the genreic VIA package only if it explicitly lists mobile GPUs.

  10. OEM drivers can lag far behind, if the laptop makers version is ancient, teh vendors generic mobile package is usually fine once you match the right one. just my 2 cents

  11. @kofis548 dude installed the pedning Windows feature update, then CLE266 16.01.20.04 (Windows 98SE/ME) went on without a single complaint. the error was technically true, just unhelpful.
