laptop gpu driver vs desktop driver: is that why catalyst display driver won't install?

  1. im literally losing my mind here short version: Catalyst Display Driver wont install.

longer version: my home-built tower came with a mnaufacturer-customized graphics driver. I wanted the newer one from AMD directly... every installer I try says its incompatible with my Windows... is the laptop maker locking this down, or is my Windows install brkoen?? I would realy prefer not to reinstall Windows just to upadte one driver.. 😂 if there is a way to check what the installer is actually comparing, I would love to know it. im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  4. sorry forgot to say the hardware ID ends in a subsystem ID from the laptop maker, not AMD. sorry for the wall of text lol

  6. Check ur Windows build with winver. Newer driver packages can require a minimum feature update. If ure on an old build, install the pending feature update first and try again. worked for me anyway 🤷

  7. hmmm as a last resort you can extract the package and install the INF manually: Device Manager > Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick > Have Disk, or pnputil /add-driver <path>\*.inf /install. if the INF doesn't list ur hardware ID, though, don't force it.

  9. lol same thing happened to me make sure u picked the right architecture and the right OS family. A package meant for a different Windows edition, or a server/workstation branch, will refuse with teh same generic text.

  11. hmmm that error is often misleading. Installers check teh GPUs hardware ID against their INF file, not just the OS 🤦 Open Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Details > Hardware Ids and compare :) If u grabbed teh desktop package for a laptop GPU (or vice versa), youll get this exact message.

  15. ok so some laptops use OEM-customized drivers (common on hybrid graphics). In that case get the driver from the laptop mkaers support page, or use the generic AMD package only if it explicitly lists mobile GPUs. good luck man!
