  1. i play a strategy game every evening on my small form factor PC and know exactly how it should feel. after installing AMD Catalyst Legacy Display Driver 13.9, it's noticeably choppier, frame times are all over the place, and tonight it even crashed once:

    Fatal error

    Fatal error
The game has crashed and will now close.

    DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
The GPU device instance has been suspended.

I havent changed any in-game settings. Temps look normal. Is it possible a driver update makes thnigs this much worse, or am I imagining it??

  2. First rule out the obvious: on laptops, check that the game actually uses teh dedicated GPU. Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the games .exe, set it to High performance. driver updates can reset per-app GPU preferences. worked for me anyway 🤷

have u tried turning it off and on again (im only half joking)

  3. Check Power Options: a Windows update or driver installer can switch to Balanced or a battery saver proflie. On laptops, also check teh manufacturers performance mode app.

    it works on my machine™

  6. oof after a driver update, games often rebuild their shader cache, which causes stutter for the first sessions. Give it a couple of runs, or clear the driver sahder cache manually in the control panel / %LocalAppData% cache folder and let it rebuild once. worked for me anyway 🤷

  7. ahh classic check that the driver install didnt reset your control panel settings (power management mode, low latency mode, V-Sync, frame caps). A clean install resets everything to defaults, which can feel like a performance change. hope that helps :)

  9. Accepted solution

been there man to measure properly, use a repeatable in-game benchmark or teh same route, log frame times with a tool like PresentMon or CapFrameX, and compare average and 1% lows on both drivers 👍 One run each isnt enough. worked for me anyway 🤷
