Accepted solution by Ruben — ok so to stop Windows Update replacing your chosen driver: run gpedit.msc (Pro) and enable Computer Configuration Administrative Templates…
  1. ok weird one i lost a ranked match to this today, so forgive teh tone. a competitive shooter hard-freezes during changing graphics settings and then i get this:

    Fatal error

    Fatal error
The game has crashed and will now close.

    DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
The GPU device instance has been suspended.

it says the device was removed... removed! two weeks ago i had zero crashes... in between, teh only change was the Detonator XP Drivers (Windows XP 64-bit) update. my friends on the same game with different cards are fine.. :) what does this error actually mean and how do i prove whether its the dirver or my card??

  4. yeah so it happened once in a second game, but mostly in a competitive shooter during changing graphics settings.

  5. Remove any GPU overclock and memory overclock. Device removed errors are very sensitive to VRAM instability. If u used a tuning tool, reset it to defaults and also check that no profile reapplies at startup. fingers crossed 🤞

day one patch is bigger than the actual game, classic

  7. do a clean install of the driver version you trust: download it from the NVIDIA support page, disconnect the network, boot to Safe Mode, run DDU, reboot, install... then test an open-world RPG for a few sessions before changing anything else.

ok so to stop Windows Update replacing your chosen driver: run gpedit.msc (Pro) and enable Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Do not include drivers with Windows Updates... on Home, use System > About > Advanced system settings > Hardware > Device Installation Settings > No. worked for me anyway 🤷

  9. @patchgarage wowww ok it was the performance preset... reset the NVIDIA app to defaults and kept Detonator XP Drivers (Windows XP 64-bit) 50.06.. lol no crashes since, even during changing graphics settings.
