Accepted solution by Hugo Castillo — if it happnes across multiple drivers and games, test the hardware: reseat teh card, check teh PCIe power connectors, and try a stress…
  1. im literally losing my mind here every time Im in a racing sim, somewhere around loading into a match, the game freezes and closes with this:

    Fatal error

    Fatal error
The game has crashed and will now close.

    DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED
The GPU device instance has been suspended.

the error text mentions DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED. the graphics card is obviously still in the PC. this only started after i installed NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Driver 290.53 Beta . ive verified game files, lowered settings and closed every overlay i could find. still crashes. is the driver the culprit, or did the update just expose a problem that was already there?? any ideas??

  2. wait does it also happen in other games, or only in a racing sim?

  3. oh ive been there lol DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED means teh GPU stopped responding and Windows reset it (TDR), so teh game lost its D3D device. check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System for Event ID 4101 at teh crash time. if you see it, its a GPU/driver reset, not a game file problem.

  4. to stop Windows Update replacing your chosen drvier: run gpedit.msc (Pro) and enable Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Do not include drivers with Windows Updates. on Home, use System > About > Advanced system settings > Hardware > Device Installation Settings > No. lmk how it goes

  5. if it happnes across multiple drivers and games, test the hardware: reseat teh card, check teh PCIe power connectors, and try a stress test with temps logged. A card that only fails when warm is a classic pattern.

  6. Sometimes it really is the game. Some engines are notorious for this on certain driver branches, sooo check the games own known-issues page before tearing your system apart. but hey ymmv

  7. @hugo_frame Turned out to be a loose PCIe power conncetor. Reseated it and teh crashes in a racing sim stopped :D The driver udpate was just bad timing. owe u a beer 🍺
