Longer version: my laptop came with a manufacturer-customized graphics driver. i wanted teh newer one from AMD directly. Every installer i try says it's incompatible with my Windows. Is teh laptop maker locking this down, or is my Windows install broken? i would really prefer not to reinstall Windows just to update one driver. If there is a way to check what the installer is actually comparing, i would love to know it. im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  2. that error is often misleading... installers check teh GPUs hardware ID against their INF file, not just the OS. open Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Details > Hardware Ids and compare, if you grabebd teh desktop package for a laptop GPU (or vice versa), youll get this exact message. lmk how it goes

  3. for me it was the settings. swapped it and boom, fixed

  4. Run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth if the installer fails on every version 😂 A damaged component store can break driver installers in odd ways.

  6. make sure you picked the right architecture and the right OS family. A package meant for a different Windows edition, or a server/workstation branch, will refuse with teh same generic text. good luck man!

  7. @uplinkgremlin i was using the desktop package on a laptop GPU. grabbed the right one from teh AMD supprot page and it installed fine, feel a bit silly but happy.
