the gaming laptop is about two years old. I updated to Radeon Crimson Edition Graphics Driver 16.12.1 cuz a game asked me to, and honestly I regret it... ive read about TDR, DDU, rollback, registry tweaks, and now Im overwhelmed. can someone give me a sane order to try things in so Im not changing five things at once? im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  3. ahh right event Viewer is full of 4101 warnings, and every one matches a black screen while running a 3D benchmark. sorry for the wall of text lol

  4. been there man some ppl raise TdrDelay in the registry to hide this... i wouldnt start there: it just gives the GPU longer to hang and doesnt fix anything :) Use it as a diagnostic at most, and remove it afterwards. good luck man!

  5. Accepted solution

that pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: the GPU didnt answer within the timeout so Windows reset the driver. open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx. the timestamps tell you if it lines up with your symptom.

  6. @heap_works omg finally turned off teh factory OC profile and stayed on Radeon Crimson Edition Graphics Driver 16.12.1. Stable now. The new driver must have been a little less forgiving of that profile.
