Driver Timeout While Waking The Monitor From Standby: I've Tried Everything Except The Obvious?

  1. Okay, this is driving me nuts. Black srceen, fans ramp up, and about five seconds later Windows comes back like nothing happened. Then this pops up:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    Its always while waking the monitor from standby. My workstation is not overclocked and temps look normal in the vendor overlay. The only change I can point to is teh GeForce Security Update Driver update from NVIDIA. Ive already restarted a dozen times, obviously :/ Is there a log somewhere that tells me what actually timed out, or am I stuck guessing?

  2. ahh classic check power before blaming the driver lol A PSU that's borderline or a daisy-chained PCIe cable can cause exactly this under load... if it's a desktop, use two separate PCIe power cables if the card has two connectors.

  3. ahh classic if rollback doesn't help, do a clean install: download the driver you want first, disconnect from teh internet so Windows Update doesn't push its own, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then install the downloaded package. Leftover profiles from older versions cause more of these than people think.

  7. Some ppl raise TdrDelay in teh registry to hide this... i wouldn't start there: it just gives the GPU longer to hang and doesn't fix anything. Use it as a diagnostic at most, and remove it afterwards. fingers crossed 🤞

  8. yeahhh since it started right after the update, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. If the button is greyed out, download the previous package from the NVIDIA support page and install that instead. hope that helps :)

  9. hmm idk not every TDR is the driver. if the black screens continue on two different driver versions, Id start testing the card and PSU instead of hopping versions.

  11. @night_trace omggg it was the power cable, one daisy-chained cable on a hungry card... swapped to two separate cables and the workstation hasnt blacked out since... lesson learned.
