Accepted solution by Milan Castillo — since it started right after the update, roll back first. Device Manager Display adapters right click your GPU Properties Driver Roll Back…
  1. long time lurker first post lol i was alt-tabbing out of a fullscreen game on my workstation when the whole screen just went black. Audio kept going for a second, then stuttered, then the picture came back with a little notification that teh display driver had stopped responding and recovered. This started the same evening i installed the NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Driver 531.68 update. Here's teh message i keep getting:

    USB Audio Device Properties

    USB Audio Device Properties
    Device status:
    This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

    it happens maybe twice an hour now... before the update, zero problems for months. I dont want to start blaming the hardware if this is just a bad driver, but I also dont want to ignore a card thats on its way out... where do I even look first?

  2. oof that pattern (black screen, then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered") is Windows TDR: teh GPU didnt answer within the timeout sooo Windows reset the driver, open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 4101 from Display or nvlddmkm/amdkmdag/igfx. The timestamps tell you if it lines up with your symptom. lmk how it goes

  3. since it started right after the update, roll back first. Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. if the button is greyed out, download teh previous package from the NVIDIA support page and install that instead.

  4. hmm idk not every TDR is the driver. If the black screens continue on two different driver versions, Id start testing the card and PSU instead of hopping versions.

  5. @uplink_rider156 turned off the factory OC profile and stayed on GeForce Graphics Driver 531.68, stable now... the new driver must have been a little less forgiving of that profile. u guys are the best!!!
