how do i read smart data to tell if a drive is dying? !!

  1. ugh. one of the hard drives in my desktop (used for media and backups) has started making occasional clicking sounds, and copying large files sometimes stalls for a second. A SMART tool reports the overall health as "OK" but shows a few reallocated sectors and some pending sectors.

How do I interpret this?? Is a non-zero reallocated count an immediate replace-now situation? I do have backups of the important stuff, but Id like to understand what the numbers mean.

  2. oh ive been there lol for the future, set up regular monitoring so u see changes as they happen... on Linux, smartd can run scheduled short and long tests and email u when attributes change. Many NAS systems have the same built in. Trend is what matters; a single snapshot tells you little.
