refurbished ex-corporate laptops: good idea for a home machine?

  1. guys pls help im thinking about getting a laptop for my parent, who mainly uses a browser, email and video calls. Options are a new budget laptop or a refurbished business model a few years old for similar money.

Friends swear by the refurbished business route: better build quality, better keyboards, easier to repair. But I worry about battery wear and how long it'll get updates. What do people here think?

  2. oh ive been there lol business models are often built for years of daily use, with sturdier hinges, good keyboards and easy access to the battery, RAM and SSD. A good refurb from a reputable seller can be a great buy... the main check is battery health: ask for it, or budget for a replacement battery, which is often easy to fit on these models. fingers crossed 🤞

  3. for browser-and-calls use, also look at teh webcam, microphone and screen, older business laptops sometimes have low-resolution screens and fairly poor webcams. A new budget machine might have a better display, while the refurb has a better keyboard... decide which matters more for this person. worked for me anyway 🤷

  4. lol same thing happened to me hey, check how long the model will be supported by the OS u want to run. older hardware can drop off teh supported list for newer OS versions. if you plan to install a lightweight Linux distribution, thats much less of a concern, but for a parent who expects things to "just work", stick with something thats officially supported for a while. worked for me anyway 🤷

  5. Not everyone's refurb experience is great. Quality varies a lot by seller, and "grade A" means different things in different shops. I'd only buy from a seller with a decent warranty and return period. A new budget machine with a warranty can be the less stressful choice for someone who isn't technical. worked for me anyway 🤷

  6. ahh classic went with a refurbished business laptop from a seller with a one-year warranty, a fresh battery, and an OS version that's still supported. Parent loves the keyboard.

  7. sooo glad u went with the business model!! those keyboards honestly make such a massive difference for daily typing compared to the mushy keys u get on cheap new laptops. since ur parents are mostly doing browser stuff and video calls, just a heads up... keep an eye on the RAM. if it only has 8gb, it might start to struglge if they have like 20+ tabs open at once or some heavy sites running. i'd check if the refurb has an open slot for a cheap upgrade just in case it satrts feeling sluggish in a few months. also, make sure the screen reoslution isn't too low, cuz some older business units have 1366x768 which can look pretty pixelated for video calls. but tbh, if it's running smoothly now, u probably dodged a bullet lol!
