Accepted solution by Amara Koch — yeahhh if the bootloader itself is damaged after a conversion, boot the VM from the OS install ISO. For Windows, use teh recovery command…
  1. hmmmm ok learning VMware ESXi in my home lab. after switcihng it to UEFI, my Windows VM shows this instead of teh login screen:

Reboot and Select proper Boot device

Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

i tried attaching teh disk again, no change. is teh disk corrupt?

This is just a lab, sooo nohting is on fire, but I wanna understand what I did wrong 😭 I clicked through teh wizard with mostly default settings. Which setting usually cauess this when moving a disk around in VMware ESXi? im about to throw this thing out the window lol

  2. Is the guest disk MBR or GPT, and is the VM set to BIOS or UEFI (Gen 1 or Gen 2 on Hyper-V)? ??

  3. oof if Secure Boot is on for a Linux guest in Hyper-V Gen 2, pick teh Microsoft UEFI Certificate Authority template or disable Secure Boot 😭 With the wrong template the VM falls through to No operating sysetm was loaded. worked for me anyway 🤷

yeahhh if the bootloader itself is damaged after a conversion, boot the VM from the OS install ISO. For Windows, use teh recovery command prompt and bcdboot C:\Windows (with the correct drive letter) to rebuild boot files xD for Linux, chroot and reinstall GRUB.
