Many very old installers are 16 bit programs, and 64 bit Windows cant run 16 bit code at all. The game itself is often 32 bit and runs fine; its just teh installer thats the problem.

hmmm for office work, stability matters more than the newest game optimizations. If theres a sepaarte stable/studio/recommended branch, thats usually the better fit.
