    Ive always been teh person telling friends to keep updates on. Then ten minutes before a client presentation, my work laptop decided to update, failed, and undid itself after three restarts.

    I still believe updates matter for security. But teh timing and the lack of control made me furious. Is the answer better scheduling, or should updates simply be opt-in for normal people? Curious where everyone stands.

    oh ive been there lol middle ground that works for me: keep updates automatic, but set Active hours and use Pause updates before important days. In Windows thats Settings > Windows Update. You get security patches without surprise restarts durnig critical moments. lmk how it goes

    oof for a failed update, the fix usually isn't disabling updates. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow. If it keeps faliing, note teh error code in update history and search that specifically.

    hmm idk id go further: for critical mahcines, nothing updates without a test on a spare first. thats how businesses handle it, and home users with one important PC can do a light version of that.

    @mdalton_0 updates stay on, but Ive set acitve hours and i pause them before big days now. fair compromise. good discussion, everyone. u guys are the best!!!
